Diamond 4Cs Guide
Understanding the 4Cs
The 4Cs of diamonds produce distinct impacts on the appearance and performance of diamonds. The evaluation of quality needs multiple factors because no single element can determine quality by itself.
Cut
Cut describes the quality of a diamond's design through its shaping and faceting. The three optical effects of the gemstone depend on this particular element.
A diamond shows maximum brightness when its cut has been done properly because it reflects light throughout all dimensions. A diamond with excellent color and clarity will appear dim when its cut has been performed poorly.
Cut is often considered the most important of the 4Cs.
Colour
Diamond color measures the presence of color in a diamond, graded from D (colorless) to Z (light color).
Colorless diamonds appear brighter and rarer, while slightly warmer tones can offer excellent value without visible difference to the naked eye, especially once set in jewelry.
Clarity
Clarity evaluates internal and external characteristics, known as inclusions and blemishes.
Most inclusions are microscopic and do not affect the diamond's beauty. Diamonds graded VS or SI often appear flawless to the eye and provide an ideal balance of appearance and value.
Carat
Carat refers to the diamond's weight, not its visual size. Larger carat weights are rarer and typically more expensive.
Choosing the right carat depends on personal style, finger size, and budget. A well-cut diamond can appear larger than its carat weight suggests.
Choosing the Right Balance
The best diamond is not defined by a single “perfect” grade. It's about selecting a combination of the 4Cs that suits your preferences and values.
